1.最北的島嶼洪清林師原來的資料是目斗嶼,洪國雄師在2006.09.09共生藻協會辦的九十五年澎湖海洋種子教師工作坊講澎湖潮間帶產業時,講到地理四極時將北方的目斗嶼改為大磽。陸地版圖改為141+37=178平方公里。所以我就加以引用。洪清林師有談過這問題,我有告訴他暫時這樣改,不妥再改回來,並先用藍色標示,表示尚有 討論空間。您的意見我會再與洪國雄師討論,改回原來的或是註明引用資料出處,以免發生您所說的各單元資料互相矛盾的現象。
2.澎湖小雲雀的英文名不同,是否因為一為中名,一為俗名,中名用Penghu skylark,俗名用the bird halfway up in the sky (半天鳥)。這樣解釋是否可以?
3.英文翻譯稿若出爐,我都會寄給所有參與這個計畫的伙伴參考及放在網頁。但原則上是請原中文撰稿人詳細看,是否有和原作抵觸之處。其它的伙伴則依興趣提供意見。也可以直接和王月玲老師請教。有問題的可以自行請教英文程度較好的專家或老師。我想這樣可能會造成原中文撰稿老師的困擾。

I am re-sending you Unit 3. The only change is I have added the translation of the photo captions at the end. When I translated the unit, I was using the version on the CD-ROM and there were no photographs in that version.
I also read the comment (quoted below) on the translation. The writer is correct. It was a mistake I made. I have changed the phrase, "the largest island" to "the northernmost island." The paragraph you see below is the new version with the change.

Penghu is the only island county in Taiwan that is surrounded by the sea. It is made up of close to one hundred islands and rocky reefs of various sizes. The island group covers an area in the sea of approximately 60 km from the south to the north, and about 40 km from the east to the west. The Tropic of Cancer passes through the sea between the islands of Hujing and Wangan. The northern most island in the north is Dayao Island (大磽嶼), the easternmost island is Chamouyu (查某嶼), the southernmost is Cimei (七美嶼) and the westernmost is Huayu (花嶼). Although the total land area of the islands is 141 square km, the coastline measures 320 km – it is longer than the coastline of the main island of Taiwan by 120 times per unit area and tops the list in all of Taiwan. There are sandy beaches with sand that is white as snow; there are also imposing basalt columns along the shore. In such a varied coastal environment, there is the need for means of transportation between the islands, for replenishing supplies for the communities and the trading of marine products. Marine transportation is of vital importance to the residents of the islands. Today, we call this form of transportation a “boat.” With advances in technology, most boats these days are powered by machinery; but, what about before the coming of machines? “Wind” – that is right. Human ingenuity taught us to go to nature; however, what about before man even learned to use wind power? Human power – this is the correct answer. This is a basic human instinct; but, how does human power move a ship?

Attached is Unit 1.
Thank you for making the changes in Unit 3 and Unit 12 for me. Here are three points that I would like to bring up for discussion with you; and, maybe, the writers of the units would also like to give me some feedback.
1. When I first started translating the units, I had no idea who they were meant for. I did have a feeling that they might be for students. It was a “struggle” for me to find the middle ground between being true to the original, i.e. being accurate, and making them easy to read for students who don’t have a lot of English. The difficulty has to do with the large number of technical terms in the units. It is sometimes not possible to use a simpler word because there are no simple words for the technical terms. I also worry that if I simplify the language, I may have to simplify some of the information.
However, having said all this, I will go back and look at the units again and make whatever changes I can to simplify the language.
One example of how I can simplify the language is in the section “Legend of Black Gold” in Unit 1 – the story of Zhang Bai Wan. Could you please let me know if you find it at about the right level?

Regarding the above comment, I would just like to point out that I was following the original. In the Chinese version, the bird is called at the beginning of the paragraph (澎湖小雲雀) and then (半天鳥) towards the end of the paragraph. I looked up a lot of websites to see if there’s an English name for (半天鳥) but could not find any information. That was why I chose to use “the bird halfway up in the sky” in my translation. I can italicize the phrase (“the bird high up in the sky”) to stress the idea that this is how the bird is called by local people.
3. I have noticed some inconsistencies in information in the units; for example, the land area of Penghu is given as 141 sq km in Unit 12, but in Unit 1 it is given as 127 sq km. In my translation I have followed the original version. Of course, we can always make the necessary changes at a later time. Right now the English version is as it is in the Chinese version.
I am glad that you have put the feedback online because it means there is a chance for more people to join the discussion. Two heads are always better than one. I am open to suggestions as to how we can improve the translations.

2.I have the same feeling. The Chinese version of Unit 1 is a little difficult for students to read when I read it today.
As you said, there are many technical terms in the units. It is not so easy for children, I think.
I'm sorry that I did not read your translation of Unit 1 until now.
I will send your suggestions to the author first and see how he feels.
Maybe he can simplify some of the information, then you can translate the simplified info.
3. Regarding Penghu skylark (澎湖小雲雀) and "the bird halfway up in the sky (半天鳥);" you were following the original version, you're right. Maybe I can ask someone of Wild Bird Society of Peng-hu(澎湖野鳥學會)about the technical terms .
If I have any news, I will let you as soon as I find out.
4.The land area of Penghu is given as 141 sq km in Unit 12, but in Unit 1 it is given as 127 sq km. I will discuss with Mr.洪國雄 and correct one of those two numbers .

I am glad you like the English version of the poem. The Chinese original is lovely, I would just like to add.
· Personally, I also feel that the place names really should be in Hanyu Pinyin. I would much rather call Mauyu "Mauyu" and put the Chinese name in brackets after it than calling it "Cat Island."
The only difficulty is that there a lack of standardization -- even the Penghu County official websites sometimes call them "Cat Island" and sometimes "Mauyu." So, it was hard for me to know what to do with these place names when I was translating. But I think that as long as we do the same thing in every unit, it should be all right. I have also spoken to Miss Wong about this so that she will also use Hanyu Pinyin in the units she is translating.
I will go back and change all the place names and put them in Hanyu Pinyin. However, I would like to know whether we want to call the island "Mauyu" or "Mauyu Island." So far, with Xiyu, for example, I have always called it "Xiyu" and not "Xiyu Island."
I will make changes in all the units at one go so that Mr. Chen won't have to keep going back and changing little things here and there.
· As for the Penghu Skylark, I will change it to "Penghu Oriental Skylark" and "mid-sky bird." I will do this when I change the place names in that unit.

When I wrote "I will go back and change all the place names
to Hanyu Pinyin," I only meant that I would not be using names like "Cat
Island," "Flower Island," etc. I have no preference for one system of pinyin
over another.
There is no standardization regarding place names even on government websites.
For example, I have seen Xiyu translated as "Siyu," "Xiyu," and even "West
Island."
The only areas where I have seen standardization are in road signs which are in
Hanyu Pinyin and in English addresses as given on the Taiwan Postal Services
website.
Maybe we should consider who the intended readers of the units are. If there is
a chance that they may be read by people outside Taiwan, I would suggest using
terms/place names that conform to an international standard.
I will happily go along with whatever the authors of the units decide. Just let
me know what you would like to see in the translations and I will make the
appropriate changes.

Dear Mr. Chen,
Attached is the Preface. There are a number of points I need to bring to your attention:
1. I used Mr. Chien-fa Wang for the County Governor. I took the English translation from the Penghu County Website. However, I did not translate the two Mr. Su's names as I was not sure how they would like it translated. I have always felt it is important to be careful about translating people's names so that we don't offend. Can I ask you to find out how they would like their names spelt?
2. I have given Mr. Chien-fa Wang's title as "County Governor" although on the Penghu County Website it is given as "Prefect" because according to the Ministry of Interior Affairs, Penghu is a county and not a prefecture. (Prefecture is really a Japanese term.)
3. In the Preface itself, I wrote "1281 C. E. (Common Era)" instead of "1281 A. D. (Anno Domini)" because nowadays C. E. is the new standard term used in North America. A. D. (in the year of our lord) is no longer used because it is "religious" in nature. If you feel that in Taiwan people would still prefer A. D., then, by all means, change it back. I don't have a problem with that.
Similarly, in Unit 12 (Canoeing), I have used "Inuit" instead of "Eskimos" and "Native Americans" instead of "Indians." In North America, those are terms which are now "politically incorrect."
1. In the Preface, in the last two or three paragraphs, there are references to 師生. I have translated it as "teachers and students" though I feel that properly speaking, it should be just "students." Again, if you feel we should have it changed, please let me know.
2. I have made the language of the Preface a bit more fancy because it is the Director of Education writing and he's probably writing more for the public than just students.
As for the Table of Contents, I need to find out from Ms. Wong what the titles in English of the units she's translating are. I don't think she is in school this week, so I won't be able to get back to you with the translation until next week.

These are “learning areas,” so there are special terms for them. We use similar terms in our curriculums in Canada. For example, English is called “Language Arts” in our schools. Does that clarify things?
2. As for the title of Unit 12, I am afraid I was not very clear. I was referring to the title in Unit 12 itself, not in the Table of Contents. Sorry about that.
